We've just heard that James Doohan, best known as Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott from STAR TREK has passed away this morning in Redmond, Washington among his friends and wife. Vancouver born Doohan was known for his mischieviousness while serving in the Canadian armed forced during World War II and he was a survivor of the Canadian part of D-Day (Juno Beach invasion) where he lost a finger. He had quite a busy acting career before Star Trek, and is well remembered at the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) for various radio and television work during the network's early days, including a live TV sci-fi series done by CBC in the 1950's. Mr. Doohan invented the Klingon language and the sound of Vulcan for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and was a regular on the short lived saturday morning series "Star Command" but most recently appeared in the TV movie "Knight Rider Returns". James Doohan was 85.
Rest well Jimmy, you earned it, lad!

We've just heard that James Doohan, best known as Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott from STAR TREK has passed away this morning in Redmond, Washington among his friends and wife. Vancouver born Doohan was a survivor of D-Day (where he lost part of one finger) and was known in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a "bad-boy" for his aerial stunts and pranks. He had quite a busy acting career before Star Trek, and is well remembered at the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) for various radio and television work during the network's early days, including a live TV sci-fi series done by CBC in the 1950's. Acknowledged, thanks for the intel. I find it fitting that I should learn of MR. JAMES DOOHAN'S death here in this forum, where such as he are respected & revered.
MR. DOOHAN'S managing to survive D-Day alone is worthy of mention, but what he achieved during the remainder of his time here on Earth is obviously impressive.
The Black Watch shall have to pipe him out for us....

Things could have been a lot worse, for MR. JAMES DOOHAN could have ended up like so many other war heroes: unloved, unheeded & unmourned.

The dilithium crystals will no longer shine and the matter/anti-matter will forever be silent.
May Gaia hold James Doohan gently in her bossom.

May Gaia hold James Doohan gently in her bossom. Or failing that, The Genesis Planet, eh?
Seriously, though, SIRONA, that was very moving.

i was very surprised by the amount of coverage his passing got on television, it seemed more than both Mr. Kelly and Mr. Roddenberry combined. It was good though because I think most people who weren't fans didn't really know his name so this was a very good tribute.
His suffering is done, let him have a well-earned rest, we are the ones who suffer now by his absense.

I wasn't aware that he had written the Klingon language and the vulcan stuff...that's pretty neat. I had heard that he had lost a finger, but not the noble situation. Apparently they used to have him hold his hand a certain way on Star Trek so that it wouldn't show. (Has anyone else noticed that "Chandler Bing" on "Friends" is missing part of a finger too? Guess it is less of a big deal these days) I remember being surprised and pleased to see Jamie show up on the soap opera "The bold and beautiful" (or was it "The young and the restless") a few years back where he played a wonderfully kind and sweet father. You never know what you are going to see when you are flipping around the channels... He was great at portraying solid, trustworthy men. Rest in Peace, Mr. Doohan

Thank You mr. Doohan for giving us such a memorable, and lovable character, and condolences to his family and especially his children. You may have left us but your memory lives with in us all.

GAZ informed me of MR. DOOHAN’S contributions to Klingon & Vulcan culture, but I still find myself amazed by that knowledge whenever I am reminded of it.
The news of MR. DOOHAN’S & that FRIENDS™ actor having lesser digits came as something of a surprise to me, as I had only recently been informed of GARY BURGHOFF’S being filmed in a certain way on M*A*S*H in order to hide 1 of his hands (possibly deformed by poliomyelitis, as with MR. IAN DURY).
I had not been aware that MR. DOOHAN had acted in American soap operas. Thanks for that intel, also. If I ever had the opportunity to work on such a programme, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS™ would be my first choice, as I would love to work opposite HERR ERIC BRAEDEN’S VICTOR NEWMAN.
POST SCRIPTUM: "MARY MAC'S mother's makin' MARY MAC marry me; My mother's makin' me marry MARY MAC...."
