MON. OCT. 11/2004/11:07 E.S.T.
I have just been informed that MR. CHRISTOPHER REEVE died after having lapsed into a coma.
MR. REEVE first came to my attention as CLARK KENT/SUPERMAN™ in SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE™ (1978), wherein his crisp characterisations of both roles went a long way toward earning C2F™ adaptations the respect they had long been missing, thereby paving the way for such great fare as THE PUNISHER™, BLADE™[/BLADE II™/BLADE™: TRINITY/B] & SPIDER-MAN™/SPIDER-MAN 2™.
Not content to rely on his boyish good looks, MR. REEVE earned my respect with his adventurous choices of roles in films like DEATHTRAP™ opposite SIR MICHAEL CAINE, VOICES OFF™, again with SIR MICHAEAL CAINE, SOMEWHERE IN TIME™ opposite MS. JANE SEYMOUR, the remake of REAR WINDOW™, & his return to the SUPERMAN™/DC™ Universe in a recurring role on the SMALLVILLE™ episodic that stars TOM WELLING as young CLARK KENT, as well as MS. ANNETTE O’TOOLE (who had played opposite MR. REEVE as LANA LANG in SUPERMAN III™) as MARTHA KENT.
My adoptive father was told by doctors that he would never walk again after his spine was broken in 1969, but his indomitable will proved them wrong, so I took especial pride in the work of the late MR. CHRISTOPHER REEVE because he did not just lay down & give up on life once he was paralysed: he continued acting & began taking on the often onerous task of directing, as well.
My favourite non-SUPERMAN™ film starring MR. REEVE was the VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED™ remake, that had been adapted from THE MIDWICH CUCKOOS™ by MR. JOHN WYNDHAM.

It was a shock but not a complete surprise... these things happen to the critically-paralysed all too often. He was truly an inspiration though, coming as far as he did and overcoming his suicidal thoughts in the early days after his injury.
I was duly impressed with the special that CBS managed to put together in his trubite tonight, drawing largely from his many interviews with Barbara Walters. My son gained a whole new appreciation for the able-impaired and the good works Mr. Reeves contributed to. He shall be deeply missed.

LADYTASS,
I hope that MR. REEVE’S friends & family are viewing his death as an end to his suffering, rather than grieving for their own personal loss.
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
ADAM,
I grok the fullness of the totality! What surprised me was that he did not expire sooner, given that MR. REEVE was reliant upon a mechanical device to do his breathing for him.
I wish that I had been aware of that CBS™ retrospective that was comprised of CHRISTOPHER REEVE interviews, particularly since I was @ rehearsal for most of the day, & would have liked to record it for viewing today. I’m glad that your son was broadened & deepened by having viewed it, though….

I've been a fan of Christopher Reeve since the first Superman movie and became rather upset when I heard the news on Monday about his sudden passing. He did a fantastic job as Dr. Swan on Smallville and I was very much hoping for his return in a guest starring role this season. Apparently, the WB will devote some time to a tribute for the actor/activist this week. here's the whole story: SMALLVILLE Pays Tribute to ReeveThe producers of Smallville are preparing a tribute to late Superman icon Christopher Reeve, TV Guide Online has learned. The dedication will air at the top of Wednesday's episode (8 pm/ET), confirms a network spokesman, who declined to provide further details. Reeve had a recurring role on the Superman prequel series as the mysterious Dr. Swan. Meanwhile, production will continue on a computer-animated film Reeve was directing at the time of his death last weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Yankee Irving centers on a father and his baseball-playing son, who overcomes personal obstacles to realize his dreams. Reeve, who was overseeing the production from his New York home via a videoconferencing system, described the film as "captivating, with the perfect blend of warmth and wit." Producers have yet to decide who will take over as director. From: www.tvguide.com/news/entertainment/

KJC,
Acknowledged, thanks for the intel!
I just realised while reading your post that DOCTOR SWAN is named for journeyman SUPERMAN™ artist CURT SWAN, & is exemplary of 1 of the many small ways that Comics fans are rewarded for supporting SMALLVILLE™.
I must programme my VTR….

superherohype.com/nextraimages/supermanreturnsexclusive.jpgMR. CHRISTOPHER REEVE is "A Hard Act To Follow", but MASTER TOM WELLING is doing his predecessor proud as SUPERBOY™ in SMALLVILLE™, so all the next actor has to do in order to incarnate SUPERMAN RETURNS™ is live up to the above logo, which caught my attention immediately.

That logo looks SUPER! KJC (who can't understand why the producers of The new Superman movie didn't just hire Tom Welling for the role. I mean, God, he's what 25, 26? )

I'm pleased it struck a resonant chord for you both, as well.
Perhaps it would make too much sense for MASTER TOM WELLING to essay the role in SUPERMAN RETURNS™ , but I suspect it has more to do with the producers' wish to continue their ongoing success with SMALLVILLE™ in conjunction with takings from the feature film, which will likely maintain the conceit of nobody recognising CLARK KENT & SUPERMAN™ as 1 & the same physical entity.
