In conversation with some fans recently (Thanks, BGA!), I mentioned that I admire the concise brevity of the journalistic style embraced by American magazines, which led to my being sent a list of questions to answer here in ELECTRIC CHATTM:
1. What is your favorite piece of music?
2. What is your favorite film?
3. What is your favorite TV program, past or current?
4. What do you feel has been your most important professional accomplishment to date?
5. Which project do you feel didn't live up to what you envisioned?
6. What is your favorite book?
7. If you could change one thing about Hollywood, what would it be?
8. If you could change one public perception of yourself, what would it be?
9. What is your next project?
10. What is the one project that you've always wanted to do, but have yet to be able to?
1) There are several contenders for this, but here are several that I have returned to again & again over the years:
”ODE TO JOY” by HERR LUDWIG VON BEETHOVEN
“LODGER” (Album, Rykodisk™ Version) by MR. DAVID BOWIE
“DISCIPLINE” (Album) by KING CRIMSON™
“THE DESERT MUSIC” by MAESTRO STEVE REICH
“THE JAMES BOND THEME” (DR. NO™ Opening Credits Version) by MR. JOHN BARRY (but credited to MONTY NORMAN for reasons I have never understood!)
“O, FORTUNA!” (From “CARMINA BURANA”) by HERR CARL ORFF
“RIDE OF THE VALKYRIES” by HERR RICHARD WAGNER
“THE DREAMING” (Album) by MS. KATE BUSH
“WHOMANFOURSAYS” (Album) by LISA DALBELLO
“BETTY MOON” (Eponymous Album) by BETTY MOON
“ONE OF A KIND” (Album) by BRUFORD
“U.K.” (Eponymous Album) by UK™
“CLOSE TO THE EDGE” (35th Anniversary Edition w/ Bonus Tracks) by YES™
“EXPOSURE” (Album, 1978 LP Edition) by ROBERT FRIPP
“PETER GABRIEL IV” (Album aka “SECURITY”) by PETER GABRIEL
2) I have several favourite films, but the picture I most regret not having been involved with is MALLRATS™ (which I think to be a grossly under-rated piece of Americana by MR. KEVIN SMITH!), along with:
CROMWELL™ (MR. RICHARD HARRIS Best Actor Academy Award)
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA™ (MR. PETER O’TOOLE Best Actor Academy Award)
THE DOGS OF WAR™ (HERR CHRISTOPHER WALKEN Best Actor Academy Award)
CLEOPATRA™ (MR. RICHARD BURTON Best Actor Academy Award)
RICHARD III™ (BARON OLIVIER OF BRIGHTON, The Artist Formerly Known as SIR LAURENCE OLIVIER - nuff said!)
THE PUNISHER™ (1989, MR. DOLPH LUNDGREN still doesn’t get his full props!)
ANNIE HALL™ (MR. WOODY ALLEN: The KEVIN SMITH of his generation!)
HIGH NOON™ (wherein MR. GARY COOPER taught me the true meaning of what it means to be a Hero!)
BLADE RUNNER™ (Pre-Director’s Cut Edition)
THE MALTESE FALCON™
BATMAN™ (1966, MR. ADAM WEST, Old School styleee!)
3) I have loved THE PRISONER™ since first it was broadcast, & I remain resolute that JOHN DRAKE is the man who resigned from being DANGER MAN™, regardless of what anybody in SIX OF ONE™ might tell you.
Also, BATMAN™ (with all due respect to the other actresses, MS. JULIE NEWMAR *is* CATWOMAN™!)
DOCTOR WHO™ (especially MR. PATRICK TROUGHTON’S incarnation!)
4) In terms of international longevity, LA FEMME NIKITA™ remains a high watermark for me, along with JOHN WOO’S ONCE A THIEF™, but FINNEGAN’S SQUAD™ is the series that will determine whether or not I have assimilated everything that DAME HELEN MIRREN taught me in PRIME SUSPECT™, along with everything I have done onstage & on camera that led to my being chosen by MR. GARY DAVIDSON to incarnate the role of FINN.
5) I should like to have been onscreen more in the final cut of RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE™, but my name was spelled correctly in the credits & the “ZOMBIE CHOREOGRAPHY” featurette/documentary proves that I was in the film, so look out for the bloke in a black DEADPOOL™ T-shirt!
6) Crikey, that’s another question that requires a list in order to address it properly:
THE IMAGE OF THE BEASTTM/BLOWNTM by MR. PHILIP JOSE FARMER
DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP?TM by MR. PHILIP KINDRED DICK
GOOD OMENS™ by MESSRS. NEIL GAIMAN & TERRY PRATCHETT
CASINO ROYALE™ by MR. IAN LANCASTER FLEMING
THE HITCH-HIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY™/THE RESTAURANT AT THE END OF THE UNIVERSE™/LIFE, THE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING™ by MR. DOUGLAS ADAMS
CATCH-22™ by MR. JOSEPH HELLER
THE KINGDOM OF THE WICKED™ by SIR ANTHONY BURGESS
MINDKILLER™/TIME PRESSURE™ by MR. SPIDER ROBINSON
FARNHAM’S FREEHOLD™ by MR. ROBERT ANSON HEINLEIN
STEEL BEACH™/THE GOLDEN GLOBE™ by MR. JOHN VARLEY
FIFTH BUSINESSTM/THE MANTICORETM/WORLD OF WONDERSTM by MR. ROBERTSON DAVIES
LIVE GIRLSTM by MR. RAY GARTON
ON A PALE HORSETM by MR. PIERS ANTHONY
7) I would be working regularly in Hollywood, thereby having The Butterfly Effect™ on millions, possibly billions of lives, while being paid well to do what I have always loved doing, & helping TITAN-RAINBOW Media ProductionsTM in its quest for world domination - er, I mean, world peace!
8) I would like people to perceive me as someone who lives well *above* The Poverty Line!
9) My ongoing commitment is to FINNEGAN’S SQUAD™ insofar as episodic television is concerned, & I shall be rehearsing & performing @ CanStage™ throughout May & June 2005 with OBSIDIAN THEATRE COMPANY™ in a show called TWO CAN PLAY™.
Beyond that, I am allowing The Future to present itself to me whilst I continue writing a feature film screenplay.
As well, I shall continue to perform live with ANOTHER 1000 MILES™ in 2005.
Any other developments can be read about as they happen, here in this forum, so stay tuned!
10) The single theatrical project that I have wanted to attempt since my 25th birthday is the role of OTHELLO™, which is a role that many of my professional idols have essayed, including MESSRS. RICHARD BURTON C.B.E., JAMES EARL JONES, LAURENCE FISHBURNE, & BARON OLIVIER OF BRIGHTON (The Artist Formerly Known as SIR LAURENCE OLIVIER).
I would also like to be allowed to portray THE SILVER SURFER™ in a MARVEL ENTERPRISES™ feature film, preferably opposite MS. SUSAN LYNCH as SHALLA-BAL, & MR. BRIAN BLESSED as GALACTUS™.
