(quote from AOL entertainment news)
Actor Christopher Eccleston has quit as Doctor Who after just one series.
The star, who has appeared in television drama Cracker and hit film Shallow Grave, was worried about being typecast.
He is also planning new projects and found filming the series gruelling.
In a statement issued through the BBC, Eccleston said last night:
"The audience's response for the new Doctor Who has been incredible and I am really proud to be part of it and I hope viewers continue to enjoy the series.''
Former pop star Billie Piper will return in the role of the Time Lord's companion, Rose, in the next raft of shows. Meanwhile, the BBC confirmed it was in talks with actor David Tennant, the star of the drama Casanova, which is currently showing on BBC3, as a possible replacement for Eccleston.
Earlier, the BBC announced it had commissioned the second series.
The corporation is also planning a Doctor Who Christmas special, which will feature Eccleston, following the sci-fi show's triumphant return on Saturday.
Jane Tranter, BBC head of drama commissioning, said she made the decision on Tuesday.
Doctor Who launched its new 13-part run this weekend on BBC1, following a 16-year hiatus.
With 9.9 million viewers, it successfully beat the might of Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.

The series hasn't even started airing here in Canada yet, and we already hear that he's up and quit because it was too much work? I don't think I like this Christopher whats-his-face anymore. :-(
KJC (who will watch the series debut next week anyway)

I am wondering does he actually think after this that he will ever get another job as a lead actor for a show?-HMM If I were a Producer/Director/Etc I would be wondering in the back of my mind is he going to do it again? Do I dare take a chance and hire this guy? what happen's if I do and it's a hit? Is he gonna up and quit on me the day after the show first airs? Is he gonna stick around to do his job? I think I would pass on him after this. You can't trust him to stick with it- community.the-underdogs.org/smiley/armed/stick.gif [/IMG] and as for being scared of being Type cast well geez you are taking on a show that has been around for what 35+ years-D'OH- do you see any of the other Dr's being type cast? to top it off from what I've read he has pretty much stuck himself in that hole already with the roles he has played!!! I'll stop now and let cooler heads take over before I hijack the thread with my ranting-LOL-

odd that he was more worried about being typecast as the Doctor, and not as the Quiter

If I may play The Devil’s Advocate™ for awhile, people like ALEC BALDWIN & VAL KILMER have jumped ship from lucrative screen franchises without any harm to their careers whatsoever. Exempli gratia: THE HUNT FOR RED OKTOBER™ & BATMAN FOREVER™.
If MR. ECCLESTON had such concerns about finding himself “typecast”, then I wonder what compelled him to take on the role of DOCTOR WHO™ in the first place? MESSRS. WILLIAM HARTNELL, PATRICK TROUGHTON, JON PERTWEE, TOM BAKER, PAUL McGANN, et al. don’t seem to have suffered the fate he fears, & the quality of their work didn't dive into the toilet afterwards.

Having watched two episodes so far I have to say that I'm enjoying this version very much, and am somewhat saddened to already know that CE will not be continuing with the roll. The show has had the playfulness that I remember, as well as many other elements or nods to earlier versions, while raising the bar in both story and subject. just I disagreeessment

I have not yet seen yesternight’s broadcast of DOCTOR WHO™, but I quite enjoyed the pilot episode last week, despite my feeling ALVIN TOFFLER’S Future Shock™ in connection with the greater SFX budget & higher quality film stock than I had become accustomed to in earlier series.
I got the impression that MR. CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON was trying very much to appeal to the legions of North American fans of MR. TOM BAKER, for whom he was the *only* bloke ever to essay the role of DOCTOR WHO™.
I have no memory of "playfulness" in connection with DOCTOR WHO™, but I was never viewing it for that reason, so I tended to focus on other matters like Suspense, Dramatic Conflict, costumes & music.
