MON. AUG. 2/2004/18:06 E.S.T.
THUNDERBIRDS™ was a favourite childhood programme of mine, so when I learned that a live action motion picture was to be adapted from it, I was of 2 minds: it would either be glorious or cause to distance myself temporarily from that property.
Regrettably, the film had none of the inspired Melodrama that made the original series (by GERRY & SYLVIA ANDERSON, scored by MR. BARRY GRAY, & with SFX by MR. DEREK MEDDINGS) great, & virtually every character in the picture was miscast, & turned in vastly inferior performances to those given by the series’ original castmembers.
The film might just as well have been called SPY KIDS 4: THE ISLAND OF GIANT ROCKETS™, for all that it had to do with the proud legacy that is THUNDERBIRDS™.
I fell asleep less than half an hour into the picture because I was bored stiff by it, so I wonder what became of the storytelling ability shown by JONATHAN FRAKES when he directed STAR t**k: THE NEXT GENERATION™ feature films?
Perhaps the dis-involvement of MR. GERRY ANDERSON as either Executive Producer or Creative Consultant is to blame, although I did find it curious that SYLVIA ANDERSON received on-screen credit while her ex-husband & MR. BARRY GRAY did not.
The models moved me; the CGI rocketships did not, & neither did the acting, which was less than what a Supermarionette™ is capable of doing.
I should have gone to see CATWOMAN™, instead….

I never did see any of the original Thunderbirds so I have no pre conceptions about this movie but from what I've seen of the previews it is not a movie that I would care to see. Now the movie Cat Woman is one I do want to see especially due to the Actress Halle Barry.I believe that she is one of the best actress in Hollywood and has been so for quite a number of years.

TUE. AUG. 3/2004/24:29 E.S.T.
LADYTASS,
Fortunately for me, THUNDERBIRDS™ has been made available as a DVD Box Set, so my childhood memories remain inviolate.
I had intended to see CATWOMAN™ this past weekend & to attend a local Renaissance Faire, but owing to the fact that I must memorise a great deal of dialogue & had to read 2 scripts, I was once again forced to shunt those plans to the side.
MS. HALLE BERRY’S performances in INTRODUCING DOROTHY DANDRIDGE™ & MONSTER’S BALL™ were very compelling, indeed, but I am curious to know what film brought her to your attention, that you heap such superlatives on her.

LADYTASS,
Thank you for reminding me of MS. HALLE BERRY’S involvement in ALEX HALEY’S QUEEN™, which I have not seen since first it was made available on VHS..
I saw X-MEN™ & X2: X-MEN UNITED™, but I cannot claim that they were by any means my favourite performances of hers, partly because I think that IMAN would have been a more suitable STORM™.
The other works I have not seen.

Knots Landing was a big thing when I was in Junior high and High School(that would be from 7th grade on)ages12-18(or so)but it was a night time soap operaish show that followed a few families through there (only in hollywood)lives. I look back now and wonder what it was that I liked so much about the show. But hey I was young and it was soooo grown-up---lol--and Sword fish was a movie, that even though not sci-fi, I enjoyed It is an adventure/drama type did not get real good reviews but then most of the movies I have enjoyed ever do....

LADYTASS,
I was aware of those programmes, but since they were programmes enjoyed by my elder sisters rather than by me, I was not aware that MS. BERRY was involved with KNOTS LANDING™. Could it be that you liked the Melodrama, the serial infidelities, the lies & the blokes?
I have not yet seen SWORDFISH™[B/] because I don’t go out of my way to view films that star J.T., but since MR. HUGH JACKMAN is also in it, I shall make an exception.

Halle's best performance has to be - in my opinion - " Gothika" A very enjoyable movie - until towards the end when it made a plot twist that spoilt the whole thing for me. I'm referring to when we find out why everything has been happening - but I won't spoil it for those who have not seen it yet

The very first time I'd ever seen -- or even heard of Halle Berry -- was when she starred opposite Eddie Murphy in BOOMERANG back in the early 90s. And I'll tell ya, if it was possible for a completely straight woman to seriously consider becoming a lesbian, seeing her in that movie certainly did it for me! Such exquisite beauty, charm, humility and mind-blowing talent. I knew from the very first moment I laid eyes on her that she would eventually become an Oscar-winning Hollywood mega-star.
On to the subject of movies, I saw four in a row last Saturday -- and, Lord, was my butt ever numb after sitting for 9 hours straight!
I saw, THE VILLAGE, which was boring, predictable and ultimately not worth the $10 bucks I paid to see it.
After that was THE BOURNE SUPREMACY, which was somewhat confusing (spy movies with foreign names and multiple sub-plots usually are to me) but nonetheless highly enjoyable.
Then off I went to see SPIDER-MAN 2, which totally blew me away, it was so perfect in every respect. And it was also very strange for me to see people I knew, or friends of friends, up on the big screen. It kinda ruins the suspension of disbelief, you know?
Next was KING ARTHUR, which was OK but it lacked...something...I dunno what exactly. It had the right formula to be a hit historical drama along the lines of GLADIATOR or TROY, but it just didn't work for me.
And, really, the only reason I watched it anyway was to see Ioan Griffudd and Kiera Knightly in action. Both extraordinarily talented and incredibly good-looking. I've had a crush on Ioan since his first run as Horatio Hornblower several years ago and continue to follow his career rather closely.
And as it was for Halle Berry, when I saw Kiera in the role of Robin Hood's daughter in a British made for TV movie a few years back, I knew she was destined for stardom. Although I first saw her in the role of Amidala's body double in STAR WARS Episode 1, that was certainly no indication of her true talents as an actress.

KJC,
I had owned BOOMERANG™ on VHS, but the only women whom I can recall from it were MS. EARTHA KITT & MS. GRACE JONES, particularly the latter, whose outburst in the restaurant put me in mind of a situation in which I once found myself.
I have not seen THE VILLAGE™, but if it was as underwhelming as SIGNS™, then you need a big hug.
I saw THE BOURNE SUPREMACY™, but mainly because I did not want someone to spoil it for me. As with THE BOURNE IDENTITY™, I suspect that I shall enjoy the film more when it becomes available on DVD, so that I can deconstruct the H2H combat scenes, which were blurry & edited in a counter-intuitive manner. That said, JASON BOURNE is doing what CAPTAIN JAMES BOND 007™ *used* to do when portrayed by SIR SEAN CONNERY.
SPIDER-MAN 2™ made me quite happy, sufficiently so that I saw it twice. Never before had I seen DOCTOR OCTOPUS™ characterised with such Pathos. I found that this made his unrepentant villainy all the more satisfying to behold, since it was clear that he himself was enjoying it. I had dismissed him as 2nd rate before this film, but I recant that position.
(Yes, I grok the fullness of the totality of ruination of Suspension of Disbelief, which is why I am so adamant about remaining unspoiled!)
KING ARTHUR™ entertained me far beyond my expectations, but MR. JERRY BRUCKHEIMER has made me happy with everything I have seen from him. It was also the first time that I managed to find myself sympathetic to LANCELOT & GUINEVERE.
I saw GLADIATOR™ twice @ the cinema, then bought the DVD, but have yet to see TROY™, with MR. PETER O’TOOLE. O, how I would have loved to see him joined by MESSRS. OLIVER REED & RICHARD HARRIS in that picture!
HORATIO HORNBLOWER™ was/is a great TV series, due in no small part to the involvement of MR. IOAN GRUFFUDD, who wears his Welshness proudly on his sleeve, & which compelled me to watch his excellent work in VERY ANNIE MARY™, which is as Welsh as the grass is green. Apparently, I’m the only person in the Western Hemisphere who has not seen TITANIC™.
Thanks for the intel about MS. KEIRA KNIGHTLEY, whose physiognomy had been nagging @ me since first I beheld it in the advertising campaign for KING ARTHUR™: now, I know why.

Malcolm You may not be the only one whom has never seen Titanic I myself just a couple of months ago broke down and finally saw it. It was pretty much as I had thought it would be(another oh help me find my true calling and life's love movie) I was not as impressed as almost everyone else in the world was.
