SIRONA,
Having done extensive searching, I learned this song was not penned by ANITA BEST & PAMELA MORGAN, & that there are @ least 5 different sets of lyrics, each of which has a different mood & atmosphere, but are basically similar, although some are sung in First Person Subjective, others in Thrid Person Objective.
My own first exposure to “SUIL A GRA” was in a videoclip performed by ANITA BEST & PAMELA MORGAN on MUCHMUSIC: "CLIPTRIP" (representing Canadian music), so my own bias is toward their version of the lyrics, which I have been unable to locate anywhere, not even on CD.
The BEST/MORGAN version of the lyrics is favoured by me, primarily because of the phrase "until my parents wish me dead", which bespeaks the Protagonist's having chosen a life of prostitution, rather than life without the bloke she loves.
"I AM STRETCHED ON YOUR GRAVE" by MS. SINEAD O'CONNOR affects me in a similar manner because when sung by a woman, it can be interpreted as "the love that dare not speak its name" between 2 Lesbians (nuns, possibly?) who are trapped in a time & place that does not permit them to be together, which forces 1 of them to commit suicide, whereas when sung by a man, it could be interpreted that his love died in childbirth, or from pneumonia, or from smallpox, et cetera.
