FRI. MARCH 11/2005/10:03 E.S.T
I was auditioned last Monday for a production of GOODNIGHT, DESDEMONA/GOOD MORNING, JULIET™, to be performed in repertory with A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM™.
I arrived 15 min. ahead of my scheduled time of 13:00 E.S.T. as I had been instructed to do, but the auditors themselves were 10 min. late.
The Stage Manager ushered me into the room where the directors sat behind a table, while a 3rd person, a woman, sat to their right in a chair by herself.
The directors introduced themselves & shook hands, then introduced the woman as “JANE, she’s here to observe”, which I took to mean that she was likely the actress whom they had chosen to portray DESDEMONA & QUEEN TITANIA.
The Artistic Director commented that I had done “a lot of Film & Television work”, to which I replied that I’m not a snob about which media I am chosen to work in, so long as they pay me on time & the money’s green.
He also asked me about my accent, as I knew he would, since people in this country who make Value Judgements about working in Film as opposed to Theatre invariably find something objectionable about my speaking voice.
He commented about the fact that my resume didn’t list where I had been trained, asking, “Did you *go* to school?”
I told him that I had, but thought it more important to draw attention to what I have been doing recently, rather than what I had been doing in childhood & adolescence, which was why I had omitted Education intel from the resume.
(@ this point, I was reminded of the ordeal I had undergone when I was being auditioned for GEORGE BROWN COLLEGE™, whose Artistic Director had chastised me for admiring the work of MR. PETER O’TOOLE, expressing such open scorn & contempt that I was moved to wonder whether MR. O’TOOLE had won a role that A.D. had wanted for himself, & whether MR. O’TOOLE had succeeded in seducing an actress whom A.D. had wished to marry!)
“Do you have some SHAKESPEARE you’d like to show us today?”
I presented a speech I like, during which all 3 of them leaned forward intently & as 1.
“Do you have a Contemporary piece you’d like to do?”
I did likewise, this time causing all 3 to laugh aloud several times, then was invited to sit back down again, @ which point I asked whether I might pour myself a cup of water, as the room was quite hot & dusty.
They asked whether I would be available “over the next couple of days” if they called me back, to which I replied that I would be happy to return if they wished me to do so.
I was also asked whether I was available for the run of the season, to which I thought of just answering “Yes,” but it felt more correct to inform them of the fact that I would be performing in 2 CAN PLAY™ @ CANSTAGE™ during the evenings of June, & that if they were comfortable with having me rehearse with them during the day, then playing elsewhere @ night, then I would be more than happy to accommodate them.
I was thanked, hands were shaken, & I was dismissed.
While I had been awaiting the directors’ return, I had overheard the Stage Manager saying that callbacks were being scheduled for the following Wednesday, so I have deduced that my commitment to the other play was deemed too intrusive a burden upon the rigours of the rehearsal period, since I was not summoned to return.
